Be active, stay healthy, have fun!
Living an active lifestyle can bring you physical, emotional and social benefits. Taking part in regular physical activity can help improve and maintain your fitness and health, enhance your mood, and introduce you to new friends. Most importantly, keeping active can reduce your risk of coronary heart disease, diabetes, obesity and stroke. It’s essential that you live an active life, and it’s easier to do than you might think.
Active Norfolk aims to get more and more people living active, healthy lifestyles. All adults should try to get 30 minutes of physical activity, at least five days per week. And don’t worry, this doesn’t mean you have to go out running at the crack of dawn. All you need to do is some sort of activity which increases your heart rate or makes you breathe that little bit quicker.
Think about the little changes you could make to your lifestyle to make it more active:
- Could you meet friends for a walk in the park instead of a drink in the café?
- Could you cycle to the shops instead of getting the bus?
You never need an excuse to get up and be active – it’s good for you.

Exercise Referral Schemes
Exercise Referral Schemes provide access to a 12 week exercise programme for people who wish to lose weight. There are a range of schemes across Norfolk, some of which are aimed at people with specific medical conditions. Contact your GP to see if you are eligible for a referral.
| Case study A Norfolk man has told how taking part in the Broadly Active physical activity referral scheme has changed his life. Daniel, who lives in Coltishall, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes a year ago. The condition is rarely seen in people over 40, and occurs when the body is unable to produce any insulin.

Daniel, 49, knew he needed to try to lose weight and had tried before, but had little success. "For 12 weeks I went to the gym three times a week," Daniel said. "Right from the start I felt better. It was almost instant results." "When you start to lose weight it's very encouraging and you want to keep on," he said. "Dan advised me not to lose too much in one go. There was no pressure and no targets. It was down to me to push myself as hard as I wanted to. Dan was there every week to offer support, and that was encouraging. “ Over 12 weeks, Daniel lost a total of 5.5 kg in weight. He felt so much better as a result, that he continued going to the gym after the scheme ended. Following further tests on his blood sugar level, he was able to stop his medication. He continues to have blood tests to monitor his condition.. Press release: Physical Activity Referral Schemes work - just ask Daniel! |
