NHS Constitution

The NHS belongs to us all – know your rights

The NHS Constitution sets out a ten-year plan to provide the highest quality care and service for patients in England. It outlines what you can expect from the NHS as well as what rights and responsibilities we all have.

All NHS bodies and private and third sector providers supplying NHS services will be required by law to take account of this Constitution in their decisions and actions.

The Constitution will be renewed every 10 years, with the involvement of the public, patients and staff. It will be accompanied by the Handbook  to the NHS Constitution which is designed to give patients and NHS staff all the information they need. It outlines the roles we all have to play in protecting and developing the NHS and will help you understand our rights, pledges, values and responsibilities.
